John Lea-Cox received his B.Sc. (Hons) and M.Sc. degrees in Horticulture at the University of Natal in South Africa. He came to the University of Florida in 1989 where he worked with Dr. Jim Syvertsen, researching nitrogen movement to groundwater in citrus production. John was awarded his Ph.D. in plant physiology in 1993. A National Research Council postdoctoral fellowship award then took him to the Kennedy Space Center to work with the Bioregenerative Life Support group researching pH and charge balance dynamics in hydroponic systems.
In 1996, he joined the faculty of the University of Maryland at College Park, where he is State Nursery Research and Extension Specialist. He teaches courses in Greenhouse Crop Production, Nursery Crop Production, and Water and Nutrient Management Planning. His research and extension program is focused on nutrient and water management for nursery and greenhouse operations, determining long-term use-efficiency and loss of nitrogen and phosphorus. His current research interests include sensing of substrates for accurate irrigation scheduling, using wireless networks.
Since 1993, he has published 12 refereed and 24 conference papers, and has over 60 trade, web and other articles to his credit. In the last five years, he and the Maryland team have given over 50 invited presentations on water and nutrient management and distance learning techniques, over 50 contributed presentations at various national and international conferences. He and his colleagues have been awarded six national and international awards for their work.
