Chuan Hong earned his B.S. degree in Plant Protection at the Anhui Agricultural College , Hefei , China in 1984, and his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in plant disease epidemiology at the China Agricultural University (formerly Beijing Agricultural University ), Beijing , China in 1987 and 1990, respectively. He joined the faculty of the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences in Beijing immediately after graduation and was promoted to Associate Professor in 1993. He then worked as a Research Fellow at the International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics in Hyderabad, India; a Rothamsted International Fellow at the Rothamsted Research in Harpenden , United Kingdom; and a Research Plant Pathologist at the University of California, Davis.
In 1999, he assumed the position of Assistant Professor and Plant Pathologist at the Hampton Roads Agricultural Research and Extension Center with statewide responsibilities for nursery crops and landscape. He teaches a graduate course on Principles of Plant Disease Management and advises graduate students and postdoctoral fellows. His program focuses on disease prevention with emphasis given to Phytophthora pathogens. One major thrust of his research program has been characterization, detection, threshold and control of Phytophthora species in irrigation water. On-going research projects include investigations into the aquatic ecology and stress physiology of Phytophthora species. These projects are aimed at developing ecologically-based, cost-effective and easy-to-use water decontamination technologies. Other areas of interest include pathogen detection technology and fungicide resistance.
During the past 7 years his research program received in excess of $1.5 million in external funding. He has published a total of 45 refereed journal articles, 2 books, 2 book chapters, and numerous conference papers and trade journal articles. His lab has become a resource center for local nursery and landscape industries and the international communities of plant pathology.
